UKCA and CE marks: what trade buyers should check on electrical parts

Which mark you should see, what it does and doesn’t tell you, and the paperwork worth keeping.

Every electrical product you install should carry a conformity mark. It’s the manufacturer’s declaration that the product meets the safety rules that apply to it. It is not an independent test certificate, so it’s one check among several.

Which mark applies

  • Great Britain: the UKCA mark is the UK’s own mark. The government has said the CE mark will also continue to be recognised for most products, including electrical equipment, so you will see either, or both.
  • Northern Ireland: the CE mark applies, sometimes with the UKNI mark alongside it.

Rules can change, so check the current guidance on GOV.UK for the product type you’re buying.

What to check on the product

  • The mark is on the product, its packaging or the documents with it.
  • The manufacturer or importer’s name and address are shown.
  • A model or batch number lets you trace it.
  • Instructions and safety information are in English.

What the mark doesn’t cover

A conformity mark doesn’t replace the standards for the installation itself. In the UK, wiring work is done to BS 7671, and parts such as circuit protection have their own product standards. Choose parts rated for the job and the environment.

Paperwork worth keeping

  • The Declaration of Conformity, which manufacturers can supply on request.
  • Datasheets for the parts used, for your handover pack.
  • Your invoice, showing the supplier’s company details.

When you send us a list, we check that each line is correctly marked for where it will be installed, and we tell you if anything isn’t.

Got a list to check? Send it to us and we’ll quote every line within one working day.
